This little guy came ready to play!
Mets jersey, baseballs, glove, backwards hat. We had all the important stuff covered. But then he gave me that huge, scrunchy little smile with his hat held over his head, and honestly, that was it for me.
This is why I love photographing the first birthday age.
By one, you really know who they are. You know the face they make when they're being silly, what gets the biggest laugh, and exactly how quickly they're going to throw the prop you just handed them. They have opinions now. Lots of them.
And while I love a good cake smash, I don't think turning one has to be all about the cake.
Some of my favorite photos happen before we ever bring it out.
The serious little stare straight into my camera. The tiny hands wrapped around a baseball. The backwards hat that somehow makes him look about five years older and still so incredibly little at the same time.
One is such a funny age like that.
They're not the tiny baby you brought home anymore, but then you look at those chubby cheeks and those little hands and realize they're still very much your baby.
So bring the baseball jersey. Bring the favorite toy. Bring whatever feels like them right now.
Because years from now, that's what I want these photos to bring you back to.
Not just what they looked like at one, but who they were at one.
